Grade 8 Angling for Access: Using Content-Specific Technology to Enhance Student Learning in Math and Science with Real-World-Problems Math, Science, Technology, Social Studies and Language Arts
The purpose of this project is for students to work collaboratively using technology to collect and interpret data that will extend their understanding of slope as a linear relationship and how force is affected by slope. Students will apply this understanding to the real-life problem of designing a ramp for wheelchair access to the school’s playscape. Students will use PASPORT Force Sensors in science class to collect data about how the steepness of an incline affects the force exerted by an object, and how the force changes with the incline (mechanical advantage). They will analyze their data in math class to make predictions about the ideal slope for wheelchair access ramps. They will research safety requirements for wheelchair ramps and design a ramp for access to the school’s playscape. They will write a persuasive essay explaining their mathematical calculations and defending their design. Each collaborative team will create a wiki space with images of their design, a podcast defending their design, their research and their essay.

The new Playscapes will have slides, talk-tubes, swings, a climbing boulder, monkey bars, chime panels, stepping pads, a cargo climbing net, a glider, and fire pole. Both Playscapes are designed for children ages 2 to 12 and are wheelchair accessible.
